Homemade Guide DIY Your Winter Neck Warmer
Save the scarves for snowmen this winter. Active kids (and adults) will appreciate the ease of pulling on a soft, fleece neck gaiter that will keep them warm without the fuss of arranging a scarf and without the fear of getting tangled up while sledding or skiing. These gaiters consist of a double layer of fleece, with no exposed seams. They take just minutes to make, even with the extra step of using two colors or patterns to make a reversible version.
Materials:
- fleece
- rotary cutter and mat or scissors
- ruler
- sewing machine, thread, needle
Instructions for a single-color, child-sized gaiter:
- Cut one rectangle of fleece, 19-by-18 inches, making sure the fabric stretches along the longer side. (For an adult, start with a 20-by-20-inch square).
- Fold the fleece in half lengthwise (right sides facing if you’re using a print that has a right and wrong side) and sew together using a zigzag stitch, making a long tube. (For an adult size, make sure the fabric stretches along the sides you folded together).
- Turn the tube right side out.
- Fold the top edge of the tube down over itself, as if turning it inside out again, but stop when the top edge meets the bottom edge. Align the raw edges and pin together.
- Sew around the edge, leaving a few inches open for turning.
- Pull the fleece through the small opening. Sew the opening closed by hand.
To make a reversible gaiter:
- Cut two rectangles of fleece, 19-by-9 inches, again making sure the fabric stretches along the longer side. (For an adult, cut two rectangles, 20-by-10 or -10 ½ inches.)
- Stack the rectangles (right sides together if you’re using a print that has a right and wrong side). Sew along both long edges, making a tube.
- Continue with steps 3-6 above, making sure to line up the seams in step 4.
Tips: Wearing and Removing Your Neck Gaiter
If you are planning on using your neck gaiter as a face covering (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic) the first thing you need to do is wash your hands before putting it on. Once you have clean hands, you can grab the gaiter with the front facing outwards and slide it over the top of your head and pull downwards until it is positioned around your neck. Avoid touching the front of the gaiter as much as you can while doing this.
Typically, a gaiter simply sits around your neck, keeping it nice and toasty. But when necessary, you can just pull it up to cover your chin, mouth, and nose to use as a mask – and then back down around your neck when you’ve returned to your car or your home. When pulling the gaiter up to cover your face, be sure to pull it up from the sides and avoid touching the front of it with your hands. There’s no need to tie fabric straps or slide elastic straps over the ears.
As with putting the gaiter on, when removing it start by washing your hands to avoid contaminating it. You will then want to grab the gaiter by the sides and pull upwards until you have removed it from your head. Once you have removed the gaiter, wash your hands once again and place it in a safe place where it cannot become exposed to germs or bacteria. Tips: Washing and Caring for Your Neck Gaiter

The best way to wash your neck gaiter is to simply use your washing machine; then place in your dryer on the air dry setting. When removing your custom neck gaiter after use, do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Always wash your hands immediately after removing your gaiter.
